An offseason full of hype is about to turn into a season to remember. The Cleveland Browns kick off their 2019 campaign with a home game against the Tennessee Titans.
Following a 1-31 stretch and a rough 2-5-1 start under head coach Hue Jackson, general manager John Dorsey finally got team owner Jimmy Haslam on board with moving in a new direction. Both Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley were let go and Gregg Williams took over for Hue while Freddie Kitchens was the interim OC.
After a loss in their debut, Double-G and Freddie found their rhythm. They reeled off five wins in their final seven games and had Cleveland in playoff contention late in the season — something that’s been unheard of for years.
The biggest turnaround was seen on the offensive side of the ball, which led to Kitchens becoming a candidate for the head coaching job. Once a dark horse, he emerged from the interviews with the job and then the roster he inherited got even better.
Already armed with Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, David Njoku, and Jarvis Landry on offense, the Browns went out and added Odell Beckham, Jr. in a trade with the New York Giants. On defense, they brought in Olivier Vernon, Sheldon Richardson, and Greedy Williams to work with Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, and Joe Schobert.

This collection of talent is the reason hopes are high that Cleveland can finally snap the longest playoff drought in the league. Of course, being good on paper doesn’t guarantee wins — they have to go out there and put in the work.
Their first chance to prove they can do just that comes on Sunday the 8th and our writers here at Dawg Pound Daily are looking ahead to that game and predicting the outcome. Check out their predictions and if you like the writer’s style, click on their name to see more of their work here at DPD.
And with all that being said, let’s dive into the predictions. The Browns open the 2019 season Sunday against the Titans at FirstEnergy Stadium. So who ya got?
A lot of people – including quite a few here at cleveland.com – think the Browns are in for a successful season. To start off on the right foot, the Browns will have to win a season opener for the first time since 2004.Marcus Mariota begins his “prove it” year on the road in 2019. The Tennessee Titans quarterback has struggled for two consecutive seasons in 2017 and 2018, and now must show Tennessee he’s their quarterback for the foreseeable future. Mariota and the Titans begin their season against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on CBS, or DirecTV) in the regular season opener for both teams.

Best ways to watch NFL games without cable in 2019
A look at the best ways to watch NFL games this season without signing up for a cable package.
Mariota appeared in 15 games for the Titans (9-7 in 2018) last season, once again unable to play in all regular season games. Mariota has not played in a full regular season schedule during his four years in the NFL. That face, coupled with his regression the past two years, has prompted a growing number of critics to say the Titans should move on from their No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Mariota enters the fifth and final year of his rookie contract and the Titans are in no hurry to give him a contract extension.
The Browns (7-8-1 in 2018) are a popular choice to earn a playoff berth after posting their best record since the 2007 season. Second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield will have a few new weapons on offense in 2019, the most recognizable one being wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. The Browns added some talent on defense with Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson.Missing only one game last year, QB Marcus Mariota completed 69% of his passes, but Tennessee was much more of a run-oriented offense, as he threw 11 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. He can bite you with his mobility; he had 357 yards rushing for 2 touchdowns a year ago. Despite a change in offensive coordinators, the Titans are expected to have the same type of offensive system in 2019.
Baker Mayfield was exceptional for a rookie quarterback in 2018, throwing for 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in the 14 games that he played. Mayfield had limited preseason work with mixed results — a stellar opening drive in the first preseason game, followed by a lackluster performance in his third preseason game. None of that in-game action was with the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, but they’ve had enough camp work to see just how well of a start Mayfield’s sophomore season will get off to.
